Using your mirrors

One of the most important safety features on a car is the mirrors.

As a driver, you need to be constantly aware of what dangers may be behind or to the side of your vehicle.

 When using your mirrors, you should just glance in them and avoid staring into them as this could affect your steering or you might miss something happening ahead of you, such a vehicle slowing down or stopping.

How to adjust your mirrors

The door mirrors on most modern cars are electrically operated by two switches  – one is to select either mirror to adjust, left or right; the other to adjust that mirror. As they’re electrically operated, you’ll need to start the engine first.

When you should check

You should check your mirrors before you:

  • move off;
  • slow down;
  • stop;
  • overtake;
  • give a signal;
  • before and after turning left or right;
  • change lane;
  • approaching any kind of hazard.
 If you don’t check, you won’t know what’s behind you and could lead to an accident.
